You don’t have to be 21 years old and above to invest in unit trusts now.

A recent change in the Civil Law (Amendment) Bill 2009, passed in Parliament on 19 January 2009, now opens the investment world to those who are 18 years old, instead of the previous 21 years old.

Wong Sui Jau, General Manager of Fundsupermart.com, welcomes the move as it will give young investors the opportunity to start their investment journey at a younger age.

“We have been working with some of the investment clubs at various universities and we have noticed that the level of investment knowledge and enthusiasm among the students has increased over the years. Students are now more in tune with the market events and investment basics, compared to a few years ago. The important thing is not about investing now; it is more important they learn the right investment principles from a young age and we intend to continue working with the investment clubs to see how we can support them,” says Sui Jau.
